The online Masters of Education in Instructional Technology (M.Ed.) non-licensure program within the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences at Freed-Hardeman University is designed specifically for practicing teachers, educational leaders, technology coaches, central office technology directors and district and school instructional technologists in public and nonpublic schools/school systems and other industries employing instructional technologists.
The program is designed to provide the workplace instructional technologists with the needed skills to develop up-to-date online systemic professional development and continued learning for the twenty-first century employee. Candidates will receive the tools to be able to engage the 21st Century educator in the design, development and delivery of face to face, hybrid and digital learning environments.
The online M.Ed. in Instructional Technology program is a combination of courses covering the integration of instructional technology within teaching and learning for Pre-K through 20. The 31 credit hour program (4 Terms) is entirely online, cohort based and designed to provide candidates with the skills to effectively use instructional technology for classroom, school, system and professional training. Four (4) of these hours are from the Foundations Core Curriculum, twenty-one (21) of these hours are from the Instructional Technology Core and the remaining six (6) hours are a culminating integrative capstone project. The online masters program utilizes a variety of methods to provide the most beneficial online learning experience. The candidate may qualify to submit Prior Learning Experience (PLE) for five of the courses within the Instructional Technology Core. The entire program will be completed in fourteen (14) months.

What makes the M.Ed. in Instructional Technology different from those offered at other universities?
The candidate has the ability to submit Prior Learning Experience (PLE) for EDU 574, 575, 576, 577 and/or 578 if applicable. The process will be explained and take place during EDU 570 and 572. Candidates may earn credit in these courses by demonstrating their skills, knowledge and understanding of important concepts through their documentation and presentation of their PLE. More information about the PLE process will be available around April 2017.

When can I enroll?

Must I enroll as a full-time student?
No. The program is designed to accommodate either a part-time or a full-time student. The candidate will take 10 hours during the first summer, followed by 9 hours in the fall, 6 hours in the spring and the complete the program with the 6-hour Capstone during the second summer.
Can I maintain my employment status?
The online program allows the non-traditional student to complete the degree while continuing his/her full time employment.
When do I find out about the textbooks being used for the courses?
Each candidate will be expected to join the International Society of Technology for Educators (ISTE) and their respective states technology ISTE affiliate (http://www.iste.org/lead/affiliate-directory) while completing their degree. The information provided by these organizations will be utilized in the classes. Each candidate will also join edWeb and then specific communities will be assigned for the various classes. Candidates may be using online journals, databases, webinars, podcasts, Vodcasts, textbooks and other online information for their courses.
What technology do I need to participate in this program?
Is financial aid available?
With no out-of-state tuition and no hidden fees, Freed-Hardeman’s graduate tuition rates are comparable to those of public institutions. Financial aid is available through veterans’ benefits as well as low-interest loans such as the Stafford and Perkins loan programs. In addition to financial aid, you may pay your account by using Tuition Management Systems (TMS). What is the capstone project?
This 6-hour Capstone includes a self-directed project, in which candidates collaborate with colleagues within or across grade levels or departments to incorporate technological innovations into their curricula. Throughout the seminar, an ePortfolio is built to demonstrate the development, implementation and outcomes of the project. This is designed as a capstone experience that provides candidates the opportunity to apply prior knowledge and skills gained from other courses in the program. The students will demonstrate in their ePortfolio a clear understanding of the implementation of the International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards for students, teachers, administrators and coaches in the K-12 setting.
What is the comprehensive oral defense?
The final Master's exam will be a comprehensive oral defense. This exam will be conducted through Live Streaming. The oral defense will take place during July of the candidate’s capstone course. Questions related to your work in the program will test your preparation and ability to synthesize and practically apply information obtained from your courses, self-directed study and project experiences. The purpose of the exam is a checkpoint to assure that you have acquired the critically required skills and knowledge specified in the Instructional Technology program competencies.
