Freed-Hardeman University began a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction in 1985. Since that time, programs have been added leading to licensure in elementary and secondary education, special education emphasis, administration and supervision, school counseling, the Education Specialist Degree (Ed. S.) in Instructional Leadership, and the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Instructional Leadership. Programs are accredited on state, regional and national levels, and are designed for those who are teaching or desire to teach. They also offer opportunities for advanced study to people in education support roles and education-related fields. Licensed teachers may complete endorsements in administration and supervision or special education while completing the Master of Education program. It is also possible for people who hold a non-teaching baccalaureate degree to meet requirements for initial Tennessee licensure on a graduate level leading to the Master of Education.

These are student-centered programs intended to assist graduate students to achieve their personal and professional goals in a timely manner. Competent and caring advisors are assigned to each student to assist in program planning and other areas of need.
